
In the next few days, Gordon Cooper will go on a reconnaissance mission in the hills around his home in Rifle to see if he can spot some elk.
He jokes that if he gets close enough to one of the creatures, he will put a rope around its neck and tie it to a tree so he will have an easy target when hunting season opens in the fall. Students in Jackie Davis’ Coal Ridge High School biology classes started the first week of class with just that proposition. Using potential solutions including grass, cat tails, hair, dirt and cotton balls, students used the scientific method to test their theories about the best way to remove oil from a large body of water. - more -

Schuyler Van Engelenburg, son of Randy and Vicki Van Engelenburg of New Castle and a Rifle High School graduate of the year 2000, has found his niche in the scientific world of cells at the molecular level.
He graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder in May, with a Ph.D. in chemistry and biochemistry. - more -

May 27, 2010 – Rifle, Colorado – Grand River Hospital District has awarded five area students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare $2,000 scholarships towards their college education.
The five students who won the scholarships are Theresa Strouse, Maritza Arizaga, Drew Simonson, Erin Dempsey, and Rachel France.

RIFLE — Sue Beecraft remembers when she eliminated chips as a lunchtime offering in the Garfield County Re-2 School District. “Frito-Lay was not happy with me,” said Beecraft, director of nutrition services for the district, which stretches from Rifle to New Castle. - more -

It was graduation day for the 18-year-old Rifle senior.

Providing plenty in the way of offense and pitching, Michael Cash and Chris Hesselberg were cogs in Rifle's 2010 baseball playoff run.
Cash hit .532 with five homers and 31 runs driven in at the plate. He pitched to a 2-5 record, finishing up with a 6.15 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 33 innings.
Hesselberg hit .446 with a home run, 12 RBI and 12 stolen bases. As the team's ace on the mound, he racked up a 6-4 record to go along with a 4.18 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings. - more -


He may have been the last to receive his high school diploma from Rifle High School on Sunday afternoon, May 23, but he was the first student to graduate from as both an online Kaplan Academy student and a RHS senior.
Dylan Wagner received his high school diploma along with 125 of his classmates in the class of 2010, as they bid farewell to their school and looked forward to starting a new adventure. - more -

RIFLE, Colo. - If all goes according to plan, Garfield Re-2 students will soon have the opportunity to participate in a unique and challenging educational program. The Garfield Re-2 School Board approved a preliminary budget to pursue bringing the elite International Baccalaureate program to Rifle High School.

The Colorado West Festival, the largest of its kind in Colorado, utilizes all of the high school and college stages in the Grand Junction area, as 209 groups from across the state perform concert band, jazz band, orchestra, choir and show choir pieces over a period of four days.

The end of a school year always serves as balancing act between celebrating the waning school year, and preparing for the next.On April 30, the Garfield Re-2 School District held its annual Retirement and District Celebration – otherwise known as the Hootenanny. This event is made possible through a variety of corporate sponsorships and does not use taxpayer funds. Traditionally, the district has focused upon its retirees for the year, however, for 2009-2010, the event also served as a general awards ceremony where safety awards, Staff of the Year and Alpine Bank Teacher of the Year awards were also presented. - more -
Colorado Mountain College is partnering with the Roaring Fork Re-1, Garfield Re-2, Grand Valley and DeBeque school districts to offer career and technical courses, in addition to the many college-level academic courses that are already available to high school students.
